A team of researchers at the University of Hong Kong's School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) has found that taking a prescription medicine such as Viagra can boost men's confidence and reduce the chances of developing erectile dysfunction.

Researchers say the findings provide new hope for addressing the long-term impact of erectile dysfunction on the lives of men.

They have published the findings in theJournal of Sexual Medicine. The findings were published today in the journalSex Health

The team looked at Viagra in men aged 18 to 55 who had recently suffered from erectile dysfunction. They looked at their sexual performance, including a questionnaire survey, to see whether taking Viagra could help to improve men's overall sexual wellbeing.

They found that men taking the drug had higher levels of sildenafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, and vardenafil, a drug used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is a form of high blood pressure.

"Viagra, while an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, has not been proven to be an effective way to improve sexual performance, particularly for men with underlying erectile dysfunction," said senior author Dr Lee Chiang-Kuk Kim, professor of medicine at SPHHS.

"Therefore, this research should encourage men who are taking sildenafil or vardenafil to take the medicine and use it more frequently."

Researchers also found that taking the drug improved sexual performance in men with erectile dysfunction.

"The findings suggest that Viagra may be a more effective treatment for erectile dysfunction for men with underlying erectile dysfunction, but may not be as useful for men who have other conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension," said the team.

Viagra is approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. It is also approved for treating chest pain, impotence and benign prostatic hyperplasia. In addition, the drug is also being used as a treatment for high blood pressure.

The study has been published in the journal

"The results suggest that this may be an effective way to improve erectile dysfunction, but may not be as useful as Viagra for men with other conditions," said the study's co-author, Dr Nita A. Chu, professor of medicine at SPHHS.

"Further research is needed to confirm these findings and determine whether these findings could be of real benefit to men who are seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction or who are using other medicines for erectile dysfunction.

"It's important for men to discuss the risks and benefits of taking a prescription medicine with their doctors before starting treatment."

The research was funded by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Association and the Guangzhou Baiyunb Biotechnology and Biological Technology Co-ordination Group.
